Our Story
Welcome to Geordie Crackets!
We are Mike and Gillian, proud lifelong residents of Newcastle with a strong passion for our city's vibrant traditions.The arrival of our first grandchild sparked us to reconnect with Jim and Jean Thompson, the owners of Needles & Nails who had been crafting Cracket stools for over 30 years. We jumped at the opportunity to take over their business as they were wishing to retire.
Each piece is now handmade by us in our workshop in Newcastle upon Tyne. We are thrilled to continue this tradition, and we hope you enjoy and treasure our Cracket stools just as much as we do!
Cracket Stools
Cracket stools were used by coal miners in the North East of England. These homemade Cracket stools, often cobbled together from old boxes and wood, served as headrests or seating in narrow mine seams. The hole in the top of the Cracket made them easy to carry, and their U-shaped legs provided stability on uneven ground. They also used the Cracket stools for sitting on during their breaks, eating snacks and socialising and their wives used them as small steps or to sit by the fire.
With the decline of coal mining in the late 20th century, the Cracket stool was redesigned by Jack Coates, who personalized them with names and added money boxes.
Today, we are proud to continue the tradition of making Cracket stools as unique gifts. not just for children but for adults as well.
Cracket stool sizes are 36cm L * 22cm W * 22cm H and made of pine with a satin varnish finish.
